“Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions are on course to surge by 1.5 billion tonnes in 2021. It is the second-largest increase in history. Days after the International Energy Agency broke this news, President Biden hosted the Leaders Summit for Climate. The key message is that the U.S. is making a U-turn in climate policies. Instead of denying science, it has higher ambitions than ever before and is willing to play a leading role in global climate action. Is it enough? No, it isn’t, far from it. But this is the maximum that now, just three months in government is the best possible. This positive side should be welcomed just as much as the message that there is still so much more that needs to be done because there is no time to lose for further steps in the lead-up to COP26 in November. But what a major change in just three months.”
